Siena Italian Studies was founded in 2004 by Lavinia Bracci and her former students Roni Kennison, Mike Manchester, and Eliza Nash. They shared the identical aspiration to create something special. The same people are still very much involved with SIS Intercultural Study Abroad today.A living example of intercultural collaboration in study abroad is SIS. A dream we had was to built a program for motivated students who want to take part in cultural exchange through immersion. We started from humble beginnings, but today we have an entire three-floor building.
SIS has evolved since its inception in the city of Siena to become the foremost study abroad program in the city as well as an innovative leader for intercultural study abroad in Europe. SIS welcomes students from numerous colleges and universities in the United States, as well as other nations around the world.
Although a majority of the students who enroll in our classes reside in the United States, we welcome students from a variety of nationalities and have invited scholars from Poland, Ecuador, Thailand, and Cambodia.
We believe that our alternatives provide students from one country with an entry point into another so they can fully experience the cultures of other lands.Areas throughout Europe that have urban spaces are being increasingly inundated with tourists, creating an illusory sense of culture that differs from that experienced by the locals.SIS International Study Abroad founder Laurent Macomber's vision for the program was the development of a program that enabled students to experience life outside the comfort zones of their own bubbles, living as locals as much as they could. Instead of just looking at the local culture as if it were a museum, students at SIS immerse themselves directly in its distinctive culture through their coursework, host families, and volunteer projects.
