The San Blas Spanish School has been in existence since 2003 and prides itself on its practical approach to teaching non-native Spanish speakers a new language. They provide courses for adults as well as children aged 6 to 14 years old. Spanish classes are based on each student’s level, but the school promises students will have a basic understanding of the Spanish language after two weeks of basic language education. School lessons are taught exclusively in Spanish, focusing on speaking the language and uses grammar correctly. Classes are small at the San Blas Spanish School and consist of no more than 6 persons. This allows teachers to provide individualized attention to each student. The school also provides individual classes and tutoring at an additional fee. They also provide tutoring specifically for International Spanish exams like the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language, or DELE. Additionally, the school focuses on immersion activities like cultural events and family or apartment stays. The school can place students with a middle-class Cusquenian family in order to promote cultural understanding and learning Spanish more quickly and effectively. Speaking English, even on a basic level, is frowned upon during these stays. Finally, depending on availability, San Blas Spanish School provides internships with local companies and programs like travel agencies, kindergartens, animal shelters, and medical clinics. There is a dedicated volunteer coordinator on staff to provide students with resources on available internships as well as help them choose the right program.
